So you're preparing for your Theory Test... and alongside hazard perception, there's about a million road signs for you to memorise.

It's not so bad! Why?

Well, until 1963 the British roads were marked with a jumble of signs in all shapes and colours, produced by local councils, motoring and cycling organisations, private establishments and the ministry of transport....

Just imagine what that must have been like!

It was then a report was published by Warboys, recommending a radical change to road signage, leading to our organised road signs today.

Organised you say? For those of us that struggle to learn the system, listen closely.

There are generally three types of road signs. Those that give orders, those that inform and those that warn. All three can be generally identified by colour and shape. Lets take a closer look.

By recognising the type of sign, you're one step closer to understanding it's meaning.

The best way to prepare for your theory exam is to practice. Use official material such as the UK Highway code book or take practice exams on the government website. For further tips, ask your driving instructor.

Good luck!
